Bikers from far and wide are still rolling into the Black Hills of South Dakota. The 83rd annual Sturgis Rally kicked off on August 4th, 2023 and Sturgis won’t slow down until the 13th. The Sturgis Rally is the world’s largest celebration of motorcycles and the lifestyle that surrounds them. Concerts, vendors, charity rides. . . and of course the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
Pappy Hoel, the owner of an Indian Motorcycle dealer, started the rally in 1938 by hosting motorcycle races. Each year, the crowds grew. The Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club is still around 83 years later after also being started by Hoel.
Hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts from around the globe flock to the iconic city of Sturgis, South Dakota every year to indulge in the unforgettable combination of bikes and beautiful rides through the Black Hills. For some, this is the one time of year they meet up with their best friends.
“Tradition is kind of important, but also to keep motorcycling alive for the youth and everyone that’s coming up. It’s kind of one of those things, in the United States we used to have a huge motorcycle culture and we really don’t as much anymore. We see a lot of our kids going to video games,” said Brett Winsell, chairman of Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club.
It’s been a rainy start to this year’s rally. The city of Sturgis says over three inches of rain have fallen over the past couple of days.
“This never ever happens during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. We usually have 100 degrees and a thunderstorm that will come through and then it’s done. There have been times we’ve had hail, which is not good for motorcycles, but we have never had a drenching rain like this. We are under a flood watch,” said Deb Holland, director of communications for the city of Sturgis.
The rally runs until August 14. Be sure to send in your individual, group and sexy women picks to be featured in the next issue of Patrol Base Blue Badge in late August.
“We Only Regret the Rides We Didn’t Take., Race the rain, ride the wind, chase the sunset. Be Free Always!
