Tony Bennett, the renowned singer, pursued a career spanning over seven decades after being inspired by legendary entertainer Bob Hope during his stint in the U.S. Army in World War II. Despite announcing his battle with Alzheimer’s disease in 2021, he continued to rehearse his repertoire and set a new Guinness World Record for the oldest person to release an album of new material, at age 95. Bennett’s work earned him numerous awards and accolades throughout his lifetime. Sadly, he passed away on July 21, 2023, just two weeks before his 97th birthday.

Bennett’s service in World War II, as an infantry rifleman in Special Services, not only shaped the rest of his life but also put him in the spotlight as he sang for Allied troops in the trenches. This experience left a lasting impact on him, leading him to write in his autobiography, “The Good Life,” that he was completely opposed to war. Despite understanding why the war was fought, his time in combat was a terrifying and demoralizing experience that changed his perspective on life forever.
